Gotta go with GAMG and Shedder on this one. VC is da man!! I don't think there's too many guys that have recording nearly every style of music and show absolute profincientcy (spelling) as Vince has.

I think this was dicussed at the dinner table for the Omar Hakim clinic.....

I guess one time Chick Corea was yelling at Vinnie on a gig. I think it was the Electric Band in Japan. Chick had apparently lost where "one" was and was yelling/asking Vince where the downbeat was.

I don't know too many people that could confuse Chick while blowing chops and make him loose his place in time.

Pretty scarey if you ask me.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">...he's been known to do that if one is not up on their rhythmic "alphabet" [fractions]

Beween all the formidable drummers CC's played w down thru lo these many yrs, not the least of which includes Dave, Vinnie, & Novak [which is far more than "scary enough" right there; also Brechtlein, Gadd, Haynes, Lenny, Ballard, Cruz, Ersk, Tony, Cobham, on & on ], by now he should be able to do groovy "musical calculus & quantum theory" in his sleep...

Of course I have to clarify openly for some which is otherwise silently understood; that's not talking strictly math, but groovy & musical rhythms, hits, accents, & vamps within any given tune & many stylistic inflections...[AND blazing drummistic pyrotechnics].

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Christ! - of COURSE Buddy Rich didn't play metric modulations and superimpositions, he comes from a different generation of players, having been born at the turn of the bloody century. Jazz was still in it's infancy when he started playing the drums.

This type of discussion really annoys me along with the ridiculous comments like this. Are they intended to provoke thought and argument or is it due to being utterly bored? Sorry to rant, but the idea that it's necessary to question who hypothetically is better than one of the (arguably) greatest musicians of all time and if he were to be reincarnated, put in a time warp etc etc etc who would 'win'.

I've also noticed several meaningless and futile posts gathering on here recently, which to me seem to be either stirring up old gorund (Dom!!) or just streams of conciousness that have bugger-all to do with anything. Sometimes it IS possible to think inane and trite thoughts WITHOUT pressing 'new post'.

    (Awaits the backlash)

Apparently, you are not that familiar with BR's playing. He's done it all.

I think it's worth repeating what I said before -According to Miles Daves, no trumpet player has played anything that Louis Armstrong didn't play before him. I think the same can be said of Buddy Rich.

BR didn't make a carrier out of it the way VC has, but then VC doesn't swing like a monkey on crack the way BR did. JMHO.

I just don't see the deal with BR besides the fact that he had bad-ass chops, technique-wise. To me he didn't innovate anything like countless others did. Ask people why they like Buddy and i don't think alot are going to say because of his musical innovation... it is cause he could burn and shred it.

I think Tony would have run cirles around him for overall sickness.

Think about it, put Buddy next to Tony and ask yourself who you wanna pick to play on your team... i'm pickin' Tony.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Henry, firstly I played along to Buddy's albums a kid and saw him in London a couple of months before his passing. He's the reason I started playing and continue to play in Big Bands.

In responce to your point about Louie, that may well be a direct quote from Miles, but you can't simply throw it in and use it to say that " no drummer has played anything that Buddy didn't play before them. It simply isn't true and my point still stands. Name me one recording where Buddy is playing complex metric modulations, time over time and odd times over the barline. He didn't. Why? Because it wasn't in his vocabuary, Buddy was essentially a BeBop drummer, listen to his Big Band and small group recordings. Yes he dabbled in 'funk', but you only have to listen to the way he played to hear that although he was one of the most technically advanced drummers, his vocabuary was born out of swing/bop drumming.

Vinnie's was NOT. He went to Berkley, studied with Gary Chafee and learnt whole systems of note values, odd times and complex polyrhythms that although Buddy may well hinted at on the way, it was nothing like the way Vinnie/Dave et all play today.
